Hakama Paintings is an ongoing art project in which I explore the intersections and intermodality of different art forms. The movements of kendo, a martial art, are transformed into paintings that seek to capture energy, motion, and physical presence in visual form.
I become the brush, and the dojo becomes the canvas
The works emerge as performative acts in which my body becomes the painting instrument. I dip my kendo training garment, the hakama, in paint, thereby transforming myself into a brush, while the dojo — the practice space of kendo — becomes the canvas. In this way, the works situate themselves at the threshold of painting and performance art, where corporeal trace and spatial experience are interwoven into visual expression.
